As someone who is rawther intuitive and hangs out with people who talk to plants, animals, dead people, and the like, I am somewhat perplexed and amused by our modern view that ancient civilizations were helpless and incapable. Poor things, we reason, they didn't have our instruments, so they must have been just like we would be without our stuff: helpless and lost.
I doubt it.
Of course culture varies by civilization and even by generation and location, but I'm sure ancients could generally do a heck of a lot more than we think they could. Did they discover medicines by eating plants until they found one that didn't kill them and that made the pain go away? Don't be silly. They saw the right plant, where to find it, and how to prepare it in dreams or meditations. Or the animals told them, or spirit guides, or the plants themselves. Information is available everywhere, and through multiple channels. If you wait for your computer to deliver it, well... maybe you should play a few video games while you wait.
At any rate, I was amused and delighted this morning by this fascinating idea of how ancient monks could draw so precisely (you know, as good as if aided by modern equipment):
Enjoy!
